With snow settling across Canada and winter officially upon us, many Canadians may be seeking cosiness and comfort.

One way to embrace the colder months is through favourite foods and drinks, such as hot chocolate, mulled wine and the ultimate comfort food: poutine.

Originating in Quebec in the 1950s, poutine features a hearty base of French fries topped with savoury brown gravy and finished with cheese curds. In fact, over 80% of Canadians would choose poutine, with Uber Eats ranking the dish third in its Cravings Report.

But where in Canada can you find the best poutine?

Experts at Spin Casino analysed cities across the country, comparing factors such as TripAdvisor restaurant reviews for poutine, the number of four-star restaurants on Google Maps, the average cost of a meal and taxi accessibility to reveal which city reigns supreme for the cheesy chip dish.

Best Cities to find poutine

Winnipeg, Manitoba takes the top spot as the Canadian city with the best poutine options. Of all the cities analysed, Winnipeg boasts 121 restaurants offering poutine nearby, with chicken emerging as residents’ favourite topping - one of the most popular choices across the country.

Toronto follows closely in second place. However, the research reveals that the city has the highest number of TripAdvisor reviews for poutine, with the average meal costing around $25.

Often known as the ultimate comfort food,  poutine can also provide an energy boost, as its carbohydrates offer quick fuel. For those celebrating during the festive period, indulging in poutine can be a tasty solution to help power through the day after a heavy night.

Despite originating in Quebec, the dish’s birthplace ranks third for the best poutine options. Quebec City residents may also benefit from more affordable prices, as a full poutine meal costs less than $23 on average.

Residents in Whitehorse, Yukon are deemed to have the most limited poutine options, with only two restaurants recommended on TripAdvisor. Residents may also need to dig deeper into their pockets, as Whitehorse is the most expensive city for a poutine meal, averaging $50 - the highest cost among all cities analysed.

If you prefer a cosy evening in with the warm comforts from a poutine dish, enjoying online gaming offers an equally exciting and rewarding way to add a touch of entertainment to your day. Remember to play responsibly.

Methodology

Spin Casino analyzed cities across Canada and used data from TripAdvisor, Google Maps and restaurant reviews and distance to each restaurant in a taxi to find out the best poutine dish in Canada’. Each location was then assigned an index score out of 500 based on its rating across these data points.

Data correct as of November 2025.
